Military Through the Ages at Jamestown Settlement

 

Every year the Jamestown Settlement hosts an event called Military Through the Ages, and re-enactor groups come together to display military camps, technologies and battle formations from the Roman period to the modern day. Several members of the History Department attended the 2016 event in support of our colleague John Hyland, who was a judge of the “Cold Steel Division”

The weather was unfortunately cold, wet, and windy, but the camps were set up for displays of military cooking, blacksmithing, hunting and trade. A separate area hosts battle displays, where the re-enactors are judged both on their battle skills and their explanations of historical tactics. There are several medieval and early modern groups that attend regularly. Pictures here are of the Frankish group, called the Scara Karoli, and the Fenvald Vikings re-enactors. Mark your calendars for next year, because we will be planning a trip for students in the program, as well as any CNU students who would be interested in attending.
