Manuscript Workshop on Wednesday March 15th

Join Dr. Cartwright and Dr. Moran on Wednesday March 15th at 1:30 for a hands-on workshop that will give you experience reading manuscripts from Europe and the New World.

Dr. Moran will discuss the books of the Americas (both before and after the Conquest) and then will lead participants through a translation and reading of the Codex Bodley, from the Mixtec region (i.e. Oaxaca). This manuscript was painted right before the conquest of 1521, and is a history of the kings and queens of the village-state Nuu Dzaui (Mixtec) from the 10th century to the early 16th century.

Dr. Cartwright will discuss the books of Medieval Europe and then will lead participants through a translation and reading of the Cartulary of Saint-Amand. This manuscript was written in Europe c. 1250 and contains the records of the nuns of Saint-Amand, Rouen, France.

All are welcome to join us in FERG 201 for this comparison of the writing traditions of Europe and the Americas. No prior registration is required.
