Welcome! I’m Dr. Sharon Rowley, the Director of Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MRST); I’ll tell you more about myself in a moment. In the meantime, this is your window into what’s going on in Medieval and Renaissance Studies at CNU. Please watch this space for short, informative posts about the CNU’s MRST program, faculty research, classes, and the events or activities we plan for students here at CNU. We’ll also sometimes publish articles on topics of general interest related to medieval and early modern studies.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
This semester, MRST and English will be hosting a trip to see a play at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, VA. Stay tuned for more details!
We’re also looking forward to CNU Theater’s productions of My Case is Altered in October and Macbeth in the Spring. We may also host some film screenings of Arthurian or Shakespearean films. Stay tuned or contact me if you’re interested in any of these ideas or productions.
A BRIEF WORD ABOUT CNU’s MRST FACULTY:
Once again, I’m Dr. Rowley, I’m teaching Shakespeare and the Arthurian Film and Fiction this term, and am a professor in the Department of English. My research interests are broad, but my current project involves editing the Old English version of Bede’s Ecclesiastical History. I spent several weeks this summer working in the archives at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, in the Radcliffe Camera and in Bodleian Library.

I was studying one Old English manuscript in particular, Corpus Christi College, Oxford MS 279b. You can see a digital copy of it here. This work is part of a larger project I’m working on with Dr. Greg Waite (University of Otago, New Zealand), for which we were awarded a large grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Other MRST faculty members were also working hard and having fun this summer! Dr. Michelle Erhardt (Fine Arts and Art History) was in Rome for study abroad. She will tell you more about herself and this trip in an upcoming post.

Dr. Grace Godwin (Theater) was in London teaching and attending plays at exciting venues like the Globe Theatre! She will also tell you more about herself and the exciting performances coming up in CNU Theater in October.
Dr. Amanda Herbert (History) and Dr. Eric Silverman (Philosophy and Religious Studies) have been awarded grants for this year, so they are on leave. Each will be writing a post for this space in the upcoming months about their research and interests.

Finally, MRST would also like to extend a very warm welcome Dr. Charlotte Cartwright, who is new to the History faculty this term. She will tell you more about herself and an upcoming event at CNU focusing on the Magna Carta, also in an October post.
